Top 10 list from Social Media Day

I spoke yesterday at the DMAW Optimizing Social Media Day in Washington yesterday. Several people had asked for my top 10 list, which wasn't part of the planned presentation. It follows:

1. Play to your strengths
2. Sell internally
3. Decide on an online personality
4. Empower people
5. What's the worst that can happen
6. Find the right places to monitor
7. Money doesn't solve every problem
8. Lists work well, and are authoritative
9. Ask people to do something
10. Everybody loves a secret/free gift/inside knowledge

More to come, including my takeaways.

Social media links

Three interesting social media links:

How David Murray found a job on Twitter.

Word of Mouth on Twitter. Five Ipods tell a story.

Discounted Caps tickets for Facebook friends from Ted Leonsis.

Social Media Consulting

I was talking with Jeremy the other day, and pointed out some things that he could do to improve his sales process, in his new social media consultancy. I thought I'd turn the question around - if you're a social media consultant, what do you do demonstrate value and/or make the case for hiring/retaining your firm?

Social Ecommerce Planning kit

I met Greg Meany from Optaros at eTail recently. We had a nice chat at an oddly themed luau, completed with full-size roasted pig, in the midst of the Hilton downtown. They've come out with a 2009 Social Ecommerce Planning kit. It shows all the different social enhancements you can make to an ecommerce site, and categorizes them. Definitely worth taking a look at.
