Some quick thoughts for a friends aunt, who had some questions about how to publicize her small handbag business:

  • Make sure your website address is on all of your marketing materials, and tucked inside your purses.
  • Have an email collection form on your webpage, and make sure you ask for addresses on the phone when taking orders.
  • Google AdWords campaigns: These can be started for $25, and will make sure that people searching on the name of your company will easily find you.
  • Post on fashion related blogs. Make sure your URL is in the signature at the end of your postings.
  • If you live for fashion, or handbags, why not start your own blog on the topic? It's free, and a great way to get people to link to you.
  • Look at some of the other options for pay per click once you get running with Google, like Overture, Kanoodle, and others.
  • Consider sending samples to influential people / bloggers. It could pay for the cost many times over, if you get new traffic to your site.

Three more tips on growing your organic (free) site traffic:

1) Free search engine listings. You will want to submit your home page to Google for free at http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl as as well as at Yahoo at https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=srch&.done=http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request. For Yahoo, you will have to register for a free account if you do not already have one. The most important one to submit your site to is DMOZ. They spider out to a whole host of sites such as Google, AOL search, Ask Jeeves, TEOMA and more. Here is the link to submit to them for free for their purses directory: http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=Shopping/Clothing/Accessories/Handbags_and_Purses.

2) Besides submitting your site to these search engines, you will want to consider reciprocal links. Find sites that offer reciprocal links (they post yours, you post theirs on your site - typically at the bottom of your home page.) While you may not necessarily gain lots of traffic from these links, when major search engines such as Google spider they will see you pop up on other sites and increase your ranking in their free directory.

3) Find free directories that you can post your business in. This may provide some traffic to your site as well as provide more of your links on the web through site spidering.

One last tip - keep the content on your site fresh. If you update it frequently and if the content on your site is robust and relevant, you will improve your free ranking.

Cheers and good luck!
